The City Library “Ivan Goran Kovačić” is the oldest cultural institution in Karlovac. It was founded during the period of the Illyrian movement, on 1 March 1838 under the name of Ilirsko čitanja društvo (Illyrian Reading Society). The idea was to start a public library for the citizens of Karlovac with the aim of preservation and care for Croatian language, for promotion of literacy, writing and national morale.

The Public Library “Petar Preradović”, founded in 1946, continues the rich tradition of public libraries and reading rooms in Bjelovar. The development of the library was hindered by inadequate space – cramped space, 4 different locations, unresolved property relations, etc. In June 2001, after three years of renovation the newly remodelled library officially opened in June 2001.

After its relocation to the present site in 1999, the Zadar Public Library has become a favourable and pleasant daily meeting place for over one thousand users – the centre of the local community in which over 400 events take place each year and which is constantly in the focus of media attention. The Zadar Public Library has been included in the good practice guidelines of the European Community, acting as a Croatian model of a contemporary public library.
