At the BOBCATSSS symposium held in Portugal in January 2009 a paper was presented to shed some light on the libraries’ position in today’s society. The paper presented by Henrik Jochumsen and Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen states that, the physical libraries may have had some adversity in later years but that the function of the library is on the brink of change.

Ordrup Library

Ordrup Library is connected to the local high school under the same roof.

The idea is to have a multi-purpose cultural building that includes and stimulates both sports, culture and reading - and creating a recreational place in the city.

The building is closely integrated into the landscape leaving a beautiful view to green areas from the inside.

The library is central in the building witch also include a sports hall and a high school. Some areas allow room for more noisy activities and as you enter deeper into the library the less likely you will hear the other users.

The town of Middelfart is an old habour city placed on the island of Fyn (Funen). From Middelfart you can see the bridges that connect the Danish peninsula Jylland with the island of Fyn over the Lillebælt strait. The building is placed alone on an open space in the harbour surrounded by yachts.

The library is part of a shopping mall called Metropol. Metropol is designet by the architects Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen and the library has a 30 year lease in it.

The interior is the interesting thing about the library. Bosch & Fjord - the architects for the interior - has really made some interesting and new shapes for furniture and design.

Black Diamond, Royal Danish Library

The “Black Diamond” is a characteristic new library building at the waterfront of Copenhagen. The building from 1999 is designed by the Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen as an extension of The Royal Library and lies adjacent to the old library cathedral of Hans J. Holm from 1906. However, in form and materials it strikingly contrasts the old library building.
